The Student Athlete of the Month program recognizes both the academic and athletic achievements of Clark’s student athletes. Two recipients are selected each month by a committee that includes Clark College coaches, athletic department personnel, fellow students, and members of the community.

Student Athletes for the Month of September 2005

Manuel Santos

Freshman, Cross Country

Manuel Santos, a freshman out of AC Davis High School in Yakima, Washington, is having a great freshman cross country season and is on pace to finish in the top three at the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWAACC) Championships in November. He ran the second fastest 8K in Clark history at the October 1 Willamette Invitational with a time of 25:16. Manuel also works hard academically and currently holds a 3.68 GPA.

Naomi Alandt

Sophomore, Volleyball

Camas High School graduate Naomi Alandt, a sophomore at Clark, leads by example both on the court and off! Named Captain of the Penguin volleyball team, Naomi is working toward both an Associate of Arts and an Associate in Applied Science degree and plans to a major in mechanical engineering. She has earned a cumulative 3.4 GPA at Clark.


October 2005

Joey Muravez

Sophomore, Soccer

The male Student Athlete of the Month for October 2005 is Joey Muravez, a sophomore from Corvallis High School in Corvallis, OR. Joey, who served as captain of the Men's Soccer team, had a terrific season. His five goals and five assists were instrumental in the team's 8-2 record and second place finish in the Southern Region.

Breanna Mercer

Sophomore, Cross Country

Breanna Mercer, a sophomore from South Kitsap High in Port Orchard, WA, is the October 2005 female Student Athlete of the Month. Breanna had a terrific cross country season with a season and personal best of 20:05 in the 5000M at the Willamette Invitational. She placed 7th overall in competition with the entire Conference at Clark's October 8 Invitational, setting her up for All-American status. Breanna is also a great student with a 3.58 cumulative GPA.



November 2005
Josias Flynn

Sophomore, Basketball

Josias Flynn, a sophomore from Stadium High School in Olympia, Washington, is the male Student Athlete of the Month for November 2005. He is a team captain for the men's basketball team and has been instrumental in building the program during his two seasons with the Penguins. A starter this year, Josias is a key outside scoring threat for the team. He also scores in the classroom with a 3.77 GPA.

Maryam Razavi

Freshman, Basketball

The female Student Athlete of the Month for November 2005 is Maryam Razavi. Maryam is a freshman from Tualatin High School in Tualatin, Oregon. She averaged 10 points and 5.8 rebounds for the women's basketball team in November. Maryam had a great showing in the Whatcom Crossover Tournament, leading the team to victory over Mt. Hood Community College. She was the Penguins' leading scorer during the tournament. Maryam is also excelling in the classroom with a 4.0 GPA during her first quarter at Clark.


December 2005

Drew Bergeson

Freshman, Basketball

The male Student Athlete of the Month for December 2005 is Drew Bergeson, a freshman out of Washougal High School. Drew has been an instrumental part of the rebuilding process for the men's basketball team and is currently averaging 9.6 points and 5.1 rebounds per game. He has been a consistent force for the Penguins on the court and has 12 blocked shots this season. Drew is showing consistency in the classroom as well with a 3.38 GPA for fall quarter.

Kippy Powers

Freshman, Basketball

Kippy Powers, a freshman out of Sultan High School in Sultan, WA, has been named the December 2005 female Student Athlete of the Month. She has been a leader on the women's basketball team and is a true hustle player on the court. A forward for the Penguins, Kippy has played in every game this season and is averaging 3.9 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. She has readily accepted the demands of both College academics and athletics, posting a 4.0 GPA for the fall quarter.



January 2006
Garet Studer

Freshman, Basketball

Garet Studer, a freshman out of Battle Ground High School in Battle Ground, Washington, is the male Student Athlete of the Month for January 2006. Garet is a great example of the type of student athlete that Clark College hopes to attract. His enthusiasm for basketball is evident in his work ethic in practice each day, and he carries the same commitment for excellence into the classroom. Garet is ready and willing to step up and play any role the Penguins need him to on the court. He is a great defensive player and also has a knack for hitting three pointers. Garet is doing well academically with a cumulative 2.79 GPA. He is the son of Jason and Susan Studer.

Brooke Lowery

Freshman, Basketball

The female Student Athlete of the Month for January 2006 is Brooke Lowery. Brooke is a freshman from Ridgefield High School in Ridgefield, Washington. Brooke had a terrific January on the court for the Penguins, leading the team with 7.5 rebounds per game. She is also averaging 8.5 points per game and is a sparkplug for Clark on defense. Her hard work during practice is evident every time she steps on the court. Brooke is also performing well in the classroom with a 3.89 GPA during the fall quarter. Brooke will be a key returning player for the Penguins next season. She is the daughter of Curtis and Chris Lowery.


February 2006

Alex Mitchell

Freshman, Basketball

The male Student Athlete of the Month for February 2006 is Alex Mitchell, a freshman from Grant High School in Portland, Oregon. Alex has shown tremendous improvement this season and has become a key part of the Penguin offense. He has worked hard to develop all aspects of his game and Coach Arnold is looking forward to having him back next year to help the Penguins move their game to the next level. Alex has adjusted well to the academic demands of College, which is reflected in his 3.75 GPA. He is the son of Timothy and Kimberly Mitchell.

CeCe Nixon

Freshman, Basketball

CeCe Nixon, a freshman from Naches Valley High School in Naches Valley, Washington, has been named the female Student Athlete of the Month for February 2006. CeCe was challenged with a knee injury and surgery this season, but has bounced back to compete for the Penguins. She is a tireless worker on and off the court. CeCe is a great team player and is a team captain this season. She has earned a 2.53 GPA in the classroom and is the daughter of Mike Nixon and Eva Mertena.



March 2006
Matt Webb

Freshman, Track & Field

Matt Webb, a freshman from Heritage High School, is the male Student Athlete of the Month for March 2006. Leading the NWAACC in the discus and throwing a 41 foot shot put, Matt aspires to become the NWAACC Champion in both events. With a GPA of 2.5, Matt is also doing well academically.

Kelsey Scanlon

Freshman, Softball

The Penguins' starting catcher, Kelsey Scanlon, is the female student athlete of the month for March. The vocal encouragement she gives her teammates makes Kelsey a key piece in helping to build Clark's new softball program. The positive attitude of this freshman from La Center High School is also reflected in the classroom where she has maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA.


April 2006

Kyle Ulrey

Freshman, Track & Field

A freshman from Fort Vancouver High School, Kyle Ulrey is the male Student Athlete of the Month for April. Kyle anchors the conference-leading 4X400 relay team with a time of 3.21. With a time of 49.5, Kyle is currently second in the conference for the 400-meter dash and has a 22.5 time in the 200-meter dash. With a GPA of 3.19, Kyle is a leader both on and off the track.

Breanna Mercer

Sophomore, Track & Field

The female Student Athlete of the Month for April is Breanna Mercer, a sophomore from South Kitsap High School. The conference leader in the 10K with a time of 42.30, Breanna ran a 19:37 5K at Eastern Washington on April 6. Breanna also performs well in the classroom, earning a GPA of 2.64.



May 2006
Todd Anderson

Sophomore, Track & Field

Todd Anderson, from Prairie High School in Vancouver, WA, is the May 2006 male Student Athlete of the Month. A sophomore and team captain, Todd concluded his Clark career by placing fourth at the NWAACC Championships in the javelin and capped the year with a best throw of 189'. Todd was awarded the 2006 Most Improved Award and, not surprisingly, the 2006 Penguin Award, which is given for individual and team leadership, most improved, most inspirational, and most valuable. He excelled in the classroom as well with a GPA of 2.9. Todd is transferring to Portland State University, where he will continue his track and field career competing for the Vikings.

Aly Schahfer

Freshman, Softball

Aly Schahfer has been named the Clark College female Student Athlete of the Month for May 2006. Aly was a key component of Clark's first women's softball team. Splitting her time between second and first base, Aly played outstanding defense for the Penguins and led the team in put out percentage. Batting .262, Aly was named to the NWAACC Southern Region first team. A graduate of Mountain View High School, Aly has a 2.3 GPA and plans to be the student assistant for next year's team.
