Student Athlete of the Month 2007-2008
The Student Athlete of the Month program
recognizes both the academic and athletic achievements of Clark's
student athletes. Two recipients are selected each month by a committee
that includes Clark College coaches, athletic department personnel,
fellow students, and members of the community. ![]()
Student Athletes for the Month of March 2008
Janae LarsonFreshman, Track & Field
Janae currently leads the NWAACC in the women's 5k, 1500m and 800m. In the first 5k of the season, the freshman shattered the school record by running 18 minutes and one second, which leads the conference by over 90 seconds. Janae also broke the school record in her first 3k of the season by running 10:59.69. At the Mt. Hood Open on March 10, she won her heat of the 1500m by running 4 minutes 51 seconds, and then took second in the 800m dash by running 2:21.09 (8th all-time). Janae improved her 1500m time at the University of Washington Preview by running 4:46.19, which is now 2nd all-time on the top-10 list at Clark. Janae is a solid student and is undecided about her major.

Track & Field
Matt is one of the most talented runners on the entire team. He has the speed to run on the 4x400m relay and the speed-endurance to run the 5k. In the first meet of the season Matt ran a 10:22 in the 3k Steeplechase at the Linfield Icebreaker. He followed that up by running 2:00.40 in the open 800m dash, and 4:10 in the 1500m dash. He bested that time in the 1500m at the University of Oregon Preview by running 4:09. Matt takes his academics as serious as his running. He puts in equally impressive time in the library and study hall as he does mileage on the streets, both in preparation for running at the next level.
Student Athletes for the Month of February 2008
Mandy WallFreshman, Basketball
Mandy Wall led the women's basketball team this season in assists and steals. Wall was a key player in the Penguins' marked improvement from the previous season. Head Coach Nancy Boone said, "Mandy, as a freshman, has led the team in scoring on occasion. She often draws the toughest defensive assignment even though she is a freshman. She is quick and tough which will help to make her an impact player for the team next year."

Sophomore, Basketball
Orlandor has been the men's basketball leading scorer for the past two seasons. The two-time West Region First Team All-Star guard has attained several accolades during his two seasons at Clark College. During the 2006-2007 season, he lead the Penguins to their first playoff berth in five seasons. This year, he led the Penguins in minutes played and points scored. Head Coach Mike Arnold said, "'O' has a complete game which he displayed all year. He has the capability to score 40 points, and can provide a strong defensive presence. His greatest skill may be in his understanding of the game and how it should be played. He looks to get his teammates involved and is a positive role model."
Student Athletes for the Month of January 2008
Ashley KitzmanSophomore, Basketball
Ashley Kitzman has been a great addition to the women’s basketball team this season. Transferring from a four-year school to play with her sister Anna Kitzman, Ashley has made a big impact. She currently leads the team in scoring (17.2 ppg) and rebounding (8.9 rpg). Ashley has been the key ingredient to a much improved women’s basketball team who only won four games all of last season. She is majoring in psychology.

Sophomore, Basketball
J.C. Alexander has been part of the men’s basketball team for the past three years. During his first season with the team in 2005-2006, Alexander suffered a knee injury. While rehabilitating his knee, Alexander served the team as an assistant coach. As a starter this season, he leads the teams in assists and steals. Head Coach Mike Arnold said about Alexander, “Coming back after a knee injury, J.C. has worked hard to return to the hard court. A point guard with good reads and very good passing skills, he also provides a solid outside shot when defenders step away from him.”
Student Athletes for the Month of December 2007
Kippy PowersSophomore, Basketball
Kippy is one of the key leaders on a much improved women's basketball team. Powers arrived at Clark in fall 2005 when she played for the women's soccer team. After finishing her second season of soccer in fall of 2006, she injured her knee early in the basketball preseason. The season-ending injury allowed Powers to retain her eligibility and come back this season to help Head Coach Nancy Boone and the Penguins make a run at the playoffs. Kippy leads the team in steals (19) this season. She is also leading in the classroom, earning a 3.60 cumulative GPA after the fall 2007 quarter.

Sophomore, Basketball
Tommy is one of several key players for a Penguin men's basketball team that won the Clark College Holiday Tournament in December. Head Coach Mike Arnold relies on Allen for his defensive prowess. Said Arnold, "Tommy leads the team night-in and night-out by stopping the opposing team's top offensive outside player." Allen is also a leader in the classroom, earning a 3.20 cumulative GPA after the fall 2007 quarter. He is currently working on an associate degree.
Student Athletes for the Month of November 2007
Shyra HoffmanFreshman, Volleyball
Shyra was an impact player in her first year with the Clark volleyball team. Hoffman was named a Region Offensive Player of the Week twice in October and NWAACC Offensive Player of the Week once. Her leadership on the court brought her team to another level as the Penguins finished second in the Western Region and qualified for the NWAACC Volleyball Tournament. Hoffman led the team in kills and blocks during the season and was fourth in kills per game among all hitters at the NWAACC Tournament. She was named to the NWAACC All-Tournament Second Team. Hoffman intends to major in dental hygiene and enter in that field after graduation.

Freshman, Soccer
Jason was instrumental in Clark's first NWAACC men's soccer championship since 1997. Head Coach Biniam Afenegus said, "Jason was asked to defend the opposing team's best player during both the semi-final and final matches, both shut outs." Martschinske is a hard worker who always puts the team first. His hard work and success are evident on the field and in the classroom. He is a 4.0 student focusing on pre-med. Afenegus describes him as "Intelligent, but you would never know how smart he is judging from care free outlook on life. He is a joy to be around."
Student Athletes for the Month of October 2007
Kristina LandonSophomore, Soccer
As one of only two returning sophomores on this years women's team, Landon's leadership provided the positive direction for her team's improvement from 2006. She is a key part of the team working hard both in practices and in games, leading her teammates by example. Currently enrolled in the dental hygiene program, Landon plans to complete her program and enter the work force upon graduation.

Sophomore, Soccer
In his second year starting in the backline for Clark, Justin showed why he is a captain. After a tough stretch of games, St. Pierre has not only elevated his game, but also elevated his teammates as well. On October 20, Justin scored his 5th goal of the season helping Clark defeat SWOCC 4-0 which was the victory that clinched the South Division title. Head Coach Biniam Afenegus said, "Justin is one of those players who has the ability and aspiration to play at a four-year school. There has been some interest in Justin from local colleges. Whichever school Justin chooses he will no doubt be successful there."
Student Athletes for the Month of September 2007
Brooke KoppiFreshman, Soccer
Brooke, a member of the women’s soccer team, had an excellent month in September. She was instrumental to a six-game winning streak, scoring nine goals and two assists. Koppi is an all-around leader on the Penguin squad. She led the team in scoring , out-hustled her opponents, and provided verbal encouragement and support to her teammates. For her efforts, she was named September’s Student Athlete of the Month.

Sophomore, Soccer
Shawn was named September's Student Athlete of the Month for his outstanding leadership on the men's soccer team. Playing with an injured wrist, McCready was a key ingredient to Clark's undefeated record in September. In the team's biggest game against Pierce, McCready's scored two goals in the final twenty minutes of the match to force a tie, preserving the team’s undefeated season and first-place standing in their division. McCready led the team with four goals during the month of September.
