Arizona Penguins reminisce about the old days

When a call went out to gather Clark’s Arizona Penguins, 17 of them arrived at the Biltmore’s Adobe Restaurant in Phoenix on March 8, 2017.

Together they reminisced about their days at Clark and learned about the many new programs, buildings and student achievements going on in Vancouver, Wash. Of the group, there were five retired professors representing Geology, Math, Physics, Anatomy & Physiology and Biology. These men, Mike Greenwood, Wayne Colony, Mike Pick, Mike Sequeira and John Martin, have 125 years of combined service to Clark students.

A Penguin who competed in three sports while at Clark was also on hand. Richard Robertson played on the baseball, basketball and football teams in 1948-49. Robertson graduated from Clark in 1952 with an accounting degree and proceeded to establish the Arizona Credit Union where he worked until retirement.

Another Clark athlete – and a Hall of Fame inductee from the 1956 baseball team, Dale Giles – was happy he got to play in a state championship. However, he’s quick to note that the more memorable moment for him was that he met his lovely wife, Nancy, née Novak, that year at Clark.

Also joining us from the class of 1960 was William Hale and his wife. Carol Pick also attended with her husband Mike. Their daughter, Veronica Brock, currently teaches at Clark.

It was good to see so many happy, healthy and sun-tanned Penguins for this first event. Plans are already underway to meet again next year.
